Catering’s a piece of cake for Robbie at Active Dorset

Robbie found a new path and community through Access Dorset, leading to personal growth and career goals in food preparation.

I’m 32, and I’m originally from Boscombe in Bournemouth. I started at Access Dorset with Belinda, and then with Jonathan (Access Dorset CEO), and it’s been whirlwind. I found out about The Bridge while I was at a training project called CRUMBS. I play football and I’d broken my foot – I couldn’t play for six months, and I was looking for something to do.

Access Dorset has changed my life for the good. I left college for multiple reasons, but when I came here it was all good. It’s changed my life. I’ve got lots of friends here, like Victoria, who works beside me in the Horizon Cafe, she’s my wing-woman. I come in in the morning and it’s like a big family here. I have a family at home too, but my dad passed away 19 years ago when I was 13.

I love working in the Café and I’ve been here for more than five years now. I used to work three days a week, but now I’m working two and I’ve been promoted to Supervisor. To begin with, it was quite interesting, but I’ve stepped up so many gears now, it’s great fun.

I think I’ve grown as a person, and I’ve become mature. When I left college, I wasn’t in the right headspace, but since I came to The Bridge, I’ve loved working here and I’d like to stay on as long as I can.

Eventually, I’d like to go into food preparation. It’s a crazy, whacky idea, but I like the idea of ‘Cakes on Wheels’. I’d be doing the baking and making, and someone else could do the deliveries!7
