Celebrating the Autumn Equinox: A Magical Day of Corn Dolly Crafting and Fireside Storytelling

21 September, 2024

A workshop dedicated to the ancient art of making corn dollies and the procession at Slades Farm Park to mark Equinox.

In September, families, friends, and creative minds of all ages gathered at Slades Pavilion for a truly enchanting event—a workshop dedicated to the ancient art of making corn dollies, led by Rosie and Mel from CoCreate.

A Morning of Craft and Tradition

The workshop brought together people of all ages, from adults reconnecting with traditional crafts, to families enjoying some ‘screen-free’ time together. Using harvested wheat, we learned the intricate techniques required to create these beautiful pieces of straw work. Mel and Rosie shared not only their expertise but also the fascinating history of corn dollies.

Once seen as more than decorative, these creations were believed to house the spirit of the harvest. They symbolized gratitude for the current year’s bounty and hopes for a fruitful season ahead. This mix of creativity and storytelling gave participants a deeper connection to the tradition and its significance.

The Procession to the Woods

At 4pm, with corn dollies in hand, we gathered outside the café for a procession to the woods. The golden light of late afternoon filtered through the trees as we made our way to the fire circle, where we were greeted by our Fire Keeper, Layne.

Fireside Stories

Around the fire, Anna Shiels and Martin Coyne enchanted us with stories of harvest and transformation. We  learned more about the lore surrounding these traditions, including how they were ploughed back into the earth in spring to return the spirit of the harvest to the soil.

It was a peaceful time of reflection and celebration together.

A Cozy Conclusion

Though the event officially ended around 5pm, many stayed longer, enjoying the lingering warmth of the fire. Fruit and marshmallows were roasted, children played and conversations flowed.

A Harvest Celebration to Remember

This event was more than just a workshop—it was a celebration of community, heritage, and the changing seasons. Through crafting, storytelling, and shared experiences, everyone left with not only a corn dolly but also a renewed appreciation for the traditions that connect us to the land and each other.

We’re already looking forward to our next seasonal celebration for the Winter Solstice on Saturday 21st December! Celebrate the Winter Solstice with Creativity, Community, and Connection at Slades Farm
